Dishwasher salt is only needed if you have hard water — but if you do, it's essential. It regenerates the water softener built into your machine, which prevents limescale buildup.
Why this happens
Hard water contains calcium and magnesium minerals that deposit as limescale
Limescale coats the heating element, reducing efficiency and lifespan
Without salt, the water softener in your machine stops working
All-in-one tablets include a small amount of salt function — often not enough in hard water areas
How to fix it
1
Check your local water hardness — most water providers list this online.
2
If you have hard water (above 200mg/L), use dedicated salt in addition to your detergent.
3
Fill the salt reservoir (bottom of the dishwasher tub) when the indicator light comes on.
4
Use dishwasher-specific salt only — table salt can damage the softener.
