Why your glasses are coming out cloudy

Cloudy or hazy glassware is one of two things: limescale deposits from hard water, or etching — a permanent surface damage from too much detergent or heat. Knowing which one you have determines the fix.

Why this happens

How to fix it

1

Test if it's limescale: rub a small amount of white vinegar on the glass. If it clears up, it's mineral deposits — not permanent.

2

Fill and use your rinse aid dispenser. This is the single most effective fix for spotty glasses.

3

Add dishwasher salt if you're in a hard water area — it regenerates the softener and prevents mineral buildup.

4

Reduce your detergent dose slightly, especially if you have soft water.

5

Use a 'Glasscare' or lower temperature cycle for wine glasses and delicate items.

If the cloudiness doesn't clear with vinegar, the glass may be etched — a chemical erosion of the surface. Unfortunately etching is permanent. The fix is prevention: less detergent, lower heat, and always using rinse aid going forward.
